Dirk Winkel Lived in Beautiful Veessen

Dirk Winkel was born and raised in the charming riverside town of Veessen, Netherlands. At age 37 he emigrated to Iowa, USA.

Veessen is located in the Dutch province of Gelderland, on the banks of the River Ijssel, a branch of the Rhine. Veessen is a village of perhaps 700 people. Its outskirts contain several campgrounds and many dairy farms.

Dirk, his wife Dirkje, and their three children, ages 3 years, 1 ½ years, and almost 3 months, sailed from Rotterdam to New York in 1886. They settled in Sioux Center, Iowa, where Dirk lived for the remainder of his life. Dirk Winkel died at the age of 95, in 1944.
